8/29/14 – Sex-Linked Genes, Briefly

Not much to discuss on the basics of this topic, but it’s always more confusing before it’s summarized in a bulleted list, so here goes nothing.

Autosomal Chromosomes – are chromosomes that are the same for both males and females
Sex Chromosomes – are chromosomes that are different for males and females, or may be present for one sex and absent for the other

-in most animals, females have two X chromosomes
-in most animals, males have an X and a Y chromosome
-genes that are attached to the specific sex chromosomes are called sex-linked genes
-for males, genes carried on the X chromosome will not be carried on the Y chromosome, and will also determine the male’s phenotype, since there is only one X chromosome
